Freezing nerves may offer lasting relief from phantom limb pain

Summary
This study tested a treatment called cryoanalgesia, which uses extreme cold to freeze nerves in the thigh, for people with phantom limb pain after an above-knee amputation. The goal was to see if a single freezing treatment could reduce pain better than a sham (fake) procedure. Twelve adults with daily moderate-to-severe phantom pain were enrolled and followed for up to 12 months.
