Massive ICU trial aims to settle debates on blood pressure, platelets, and nutrition

NCT ID NCT06605144

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jul 01, 2026 · Updated 3 times

Summary

This study, called CEPEC, is a large platform trial enrolling 5,500 ICU patients across multiple countries. It tests different approaches to three common ICU treatments: how low to let blood pressure go with vasopressors, when to give platelet transfusions, and how to provide nutrition. The goal is to find out which strategies lead to better survival and recovery. By comparing treatments already used in practice, the results could directly guide doctors' decisions in the ICU.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Vasopressors, platelet transfusions, and nutrition interventions

What this could lead to

If successful, this trial could help doctors make better decisions about routine ICU care, potentially improving survival and recovery for critically ill patients.

What could go wrong

This is a large, pragmatic trial, but results may not apply to all ICU patients. The interventions are already in use, so no major new risks are expected, but the study may not find clear winners among the options.
