Could a single cell infusion help newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes patients?

NCT ID NCT05626712

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This early-phase trial is testing a new treatment called CELZ-201 for people recently diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. The treatment involves a one-time infusion of cells from donated tissue into the pancreas. The main goal is to see if it is safe, but researchers will also check if it helps the body keep making its own insulin. Only 18 adults aged 18–35 will take part.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

CELZ-201 (perinatal tissue derived cells)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a way to preserve insulin production in people newly diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, potentially reducing their need for insulin shots.

What could go wrong

This is a very early, small trial (18 people) focused mainly on safety. It is too soon to know if the treatment will actually help control diabetes, and there may be risks from the cell infusion or the procedure itself.
