First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether a non-invasive device that delivers a mild electrical current to the head (cranial electrical stimulation) can reduce pain and other symptoms in veterans with Gulf War Illness. About 130 participants aged 40-80 will receive either real or sham stimulation, and researchers will use brain scans to understand how it works. The goal is to find a safe, drug-free way to manage this condition.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

cranial electrical stimulation (CES) using Alpha-Stim™ device

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a drug-free, portable option for managing chronic pain and related symptoms in Gulf War Illness.

What could go wrong

This is an early-stage study with no phase designation, so results are uncertain. The sham control may also provide some sensation, potentially reducing the observed benefit.
