Scientists hunt for genetic clues in devastating Smoker's lung disease

NCT ID NCT02439528

Summary

This study aimed to understand the genetic factors behind Combined Pulmonary Fibrosis and Emphysema (CPFE), a severe lung disease mostly affecting smokers. Researchers compared 250 people, including patients with CPFE, other lung conditions, and healthy individuals, to see if those with CPFE had shorter telomeres (protective caps on chromosomes) or specific gene mutations. The goal was to gather knowledge about the disease's causes, not to test a treatment.
