Cough-Tracking watch aims to predict COPD attacks
NCT ID NCT07212439
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether a wrist-worn device that counts coughs can predict serious COPD flare-ups early. Fifty adults with COPD will wear the Hyfe monitor, which tracks cough frequency without recording audio. Participants also answer weekly symptom questions. The goal is to see if cough patterns signal an upcoming exacerbation, but the data is not shared with doctors, so it won't change treatment during the study.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could lead to a simple way to predict COPD flare-ups early, potentially preventing hospital visits.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small observational study, so results may not apply to everyone. The cough monitor might not reliably predict flare-ups, and participants' doctors won't see the data during the study.
