Cornea transplant showdown: which surgery gives sharper sight?

NCT ID NCT05436665

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study compares two types of cornea transplant surgery—DSAEK and DMEK—in 220 adults with corneal swelling or Fuchs' dystrophy. The goal is to see which procedure leads to better vision and patient satisfaction one year after surgery. Participants will be randomly assigned to one of the two surgeries and followed for 12 months.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
Cornea transplant surgery (DSAEK or DMEK procedure)
What this could lead to
If successful, this study could show which cornea transplant method gives better vision and patient satisfaction, helping doctors choose the best option for each patient.
What could go wrong
This is a comparative effectiveness trial, not a test of a new drug or cure. Results may not apply to all patients, and both procedures carry standard surgical risks like infection or graft failure.
