Cooling duration may be key to brain recovery after cardiac arrest
NCT ID NCT04217551
First seen Jul 15, 2026 · Last updated Jul 16, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This trial studies how long to cool the body after a cardiac arrest to protect the brain. It includes adults who are in a coma after being resuscitated from an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. Participants are cooled to a target temperature and then rewarmed slowly, with different groups receiving different cooling durations. The goal is to find the optimal cooling time that leads to the best neurological outcomes.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- therapeutic hypothermia (controlled cooling and rewarming using a closed-loop temperature control device)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this trial could identify the ideal cooling duration to maximize brain recovery and reduce disability in people who survive cardiac arrest.
- What could go wrong
- This is a large trial, but cooling therapy is already standard; the benefit of different durations may be small. Individual patient factors could also affect outcomes.
