Spinal catheter may offer better pain control after hip surgery
NCT ID NCT06625606
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested whether giving numbing medicine through a thin tube (catheter) placed in the spine provides better pain relief after hip surgery than a single injection. 105 patients over age 60 were randomly assigned to one of three groups: continuous spinal anesthesia, single-shot spinal anesthesia, or general anesthesia. The researchers measured pain scores, need for extra pain medicine, and blood pressure changes during and after surgery.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
bupivacaine (a numbing medicine given into the spinal fluid)
What this could lead to
If continuous spinal anesthesia works better, it could offer longer-lasting pain relief after hip surgery with fewer side effects.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed study with 105 patients. Results may not apply to all surgeries or patients, and the catheter technique carries a small risk of infection or headache.
