Cash for clean tests: can rewards boost opioid recovery?

NCT ID NCT05288751

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether offering small monetary rewards can help people with opioid and stimulant use disorders stay in treatment and avoid drug use. Fifty-six adults starting medication for opioid use disorder at a family medicine clinic will earn incentives for attending appointments and providing drug-free urine samples. The goal is to see if this approach works in a primary care setting, not just specialized clinics.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Contingency management (behavioral intervention using monetary incentives)

What this could lead to

If it works, this approach could make it easier for people to stick with addiction treatment in a regular doctor's office, improving recovery rates.

What could go wrong

This is a small pilot study with only 56 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The rewards are small and may not be enough to change behavior long-term.
