New scope test may rival gold standard for liver pressure
NCT ID NCT07424963
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study compares two methods for measuring blood pressure in the liver (portal hypertension) in people with cirrhosis or other liver conditions. The standard method (HVPG) uses a catheter inserted through a neck vein, while the newer method (EUS-PPG) uses an endoscope passed through the mouth. Researchers want to see if the newer method is just as accurate. Forty adults will have both measurements taken during one session to directly compare results.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- What this could lead to
- If EUS-PPG proves as accurate as HVPG, it could offer a less invasive way to measure portal pressure, potentially improving diagnosis and monitoring of liver disease.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-phase study (40 people) focused on accuracy, not treatment. The EUS method still requires sedation and may not replace HVPG if results don't match well.
