Ear injury diagnosis showdown: which grading system wins?

NCT ID NCT04726306

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests how accurately doctors, nurses, and technicians can diagnose ear barotrauma (pressure injury to the ear) using two different grading systems: the TEED score and the O'Neill Grading System (OGS). Thirty healthcare providers will grade 120 photos of eardrums to see which system is more precise and consistent. The goal is to find a better tool for diagnosing and treating this condition.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to
If successful, this could lead to a more accurate and consistent way for doctors and nurses to diagnose ear barotrauma, improving treatment decisions.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early validation study with only 30 participants reviewing photos, not real patients. The results may not apply to all clinical settings or patient populations.
