Can shorter dialysis sessions still clean the blood effectively?
NCT ID NCT07348536
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether shorter or standard-length dialysis sessions using expanded hemodialysis can remove waste products from the blood as well as a more intensive technique called high-volume hemodiafiltration. Fifteen adults with end-stage kidney disease will try three different session lengths (180, 210, and 240 minutes) and one session of the comparison method. Blood samples will measure how well each session removes toxins.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Expanded hemodialysis with medium cut-off membrane and high-volume online hemodiafiltration
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this study could help doctors personalize dialysis prescriptions by identifying the shortest effective treatment time for removing toxins.
- What could go wrong
- This is a very small, early-stage study with only 15 participants, so results may not apply to all dialysis patients. It measures toxin removal, not long-term health outcomes.
