Breath test meets x-ray: a new way to pinpoint gut troubles?
NCT ID NCT07145580
First seen Aug 20, 2026 · Last updated Aug 21, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study looks at whether combining a lactulose breath test with an abdominal X-ray can more accurately diagnose two common gut conditions: small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) and carbohydrate intolerance. The test works by tracking hydrogen in the breath and using an X-ray to see where food has traveled in the gut. If hydrogen rises before the contrast agent reaches the large intestine, it suggests SIBO; if it rises after, it points to carbohydrate intolerance. The researchers will review data from 510 patients who had this combined test to see if it is practical and safe.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Combined lactulose H2-breath test with abdominal X-ray imaging
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could provide a simple, affordable way to accurately distinguish between SIBO and carbohydrate intolerance, leading to better treatment choices.
- What could go wrong
- This is a retrospective study, so it can't prove cause and effect. The test's accuracy may be limited by variability in transit time measurements, and the added X-ray may not be practical in all settings.
