Can sealing the wound after polyp removal cut bleeding risk?
NCT ID NCT06807073
First seen Aug 11, 2026 · Last updated Aug 12, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This trial tests whether completely closing the wound left after removing large flat colon polyps (at least 20 mm) reduces complications like delayed bleeding or perforation. About 686 adults scheduled for polyp removal will be randomly assigned to either have the wound closed with a special device or left open as usual. Participants will be monitored for side effects and will have follow-up colonoscopies at 6 and 18 months to check for polyp regrowth.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Prophylactic defect closure (a procedure to close the wound left after removing a large colon polyp)
- What this could lead to
- If complete closure works, it could become a standard step after removing large colon polyps, lowering the risk of bleeding and other complications.
- What could go wrong
- This is a randomized trial, but the outcome depends on the skill of the endoscopist. Closure might not reduce complications and could add time or risk.
