New collagen patch shows promise for stubborn leg ulcers
NCT ID NCT06831760
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested two types of skin substitutes for treating venous leg ulcers, which are slow-healing sores caused by poor blood flow in the legs. Sixty adults with these ulcers received either a collagen-based skin substitute or a dehydrated human amnion/chorion membrane, both applied weekly with standard wound care. The goal was to see which one helped wounds heal faster and improve tissue health, measured by wound size and microscopic changes in biopsied tissue.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Type-I Collagen-based Skin Substitute and Dehydrated Human Amnion/Chorion Membrane
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that a collagen-based skin substitute heals venous leg ulcers faster or better than the current amnion membrane treatment, offering a new option for patients.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed trial with only 60 participants. The results may not apply to all patients, and the benefits over standard care are not yet proven in larger studies.
