Heart surgery patients get new hope: colchicine may stop Post-Op AFib

NCT ID NCT06798714

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether the anti-inflammatory drug colchicine, combined with a special surgical technique, can prevent atrial fibrillation (a type of irregular heartbeat) after coronary artery bypass surgery. Researchers will compare 70 patients receiving colchicine plus the new technique against 70 patients getting standard care. The goal is to reduce dangerous heart-rhythm problems after surgery.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

colchicine

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a simple, low-cost way to prevent a common heart-rhythm problem after bypass surgery.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-phase trial with only 140 people, so results may not apply to everyone. Colchicine can cause stomach upset or other side effects.
