Stroke recovery at home: brain training may cut dementia risk

NCT ID NCT07251517

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tested whether a 40-hour, 8-week cognitive telerehabilitation program could reduce the risk of memory and thinking problems after a stroke. 86 adults who recently had a stroke were randomly assigned to either the home-based brain training or standard care. The program included exercises for memory, attention, and problem-solving. Researchers measured cognitive impairment, daily living skills, and quality of life six months later.

What this could lead to

If it works, this could provide an effective, convenient way to prevent or reduce cognitive decline after a stroke, improving daily life and independence.

What could go wrong

This is a relatively small, completed trial, so results may not apply to all stroke survivors. The intervention requires significant time commitment, and benefits may not persist long-term.
