Closed suctioning may keep ICU patients more stable and less painful
NCT ID NCT06143865
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This completed study from Turkey tested whether a closed suction system (a catheter that stays inside the breathing tube) causes less change in blood pressure, heart rate, breathing, and oxygen levels, and less pain, compared to usual care. The study included 67 adults on mechanical ventilators who were not sedated. Researchers measured vital signs and pain scores at three time points. The results could help nurses decide if closed suctioning is better for patient comfort and safety.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Closed system aspiration (a suction catheter inside a protective sheath, used repeatedly during the day)
What this could lead to
If the results show closed aspiration causes fewer changes in vital signs and less pain, it could support using this method routinely in ICUs to improve patient comfort and safety.
What could go wrong
This is a small, single-center study with only 67 participants, so findings may not apply to all ICU patients. The study is already completed, so it only provides observational data, not proof of a new treatment.
