ICU fasting myth busted? new study lets patients eat before intubation

NCT ID NCT06510972

First seen Feb 20, 2026 · Last updated May 09, 2026 · Updated 9 times

Summary

This study looks at whether patients in the ICU with severe breathing problems can safely eat or drink before they need a breathing tube. Normally, patients are kept fasting to prevent food from getting into the lungs, but this may cause discomfort and malnutrition. The study will compare patients who continue eating to those who fast, to see if eating increases the risk of needing a tube or other complications.
