Could talking therapy ease HIV-Related depression? small study tests culturally adapted CBT
NCT ID NCT07235852
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This pilot study tested a six-session culturally adapted cognitive behavioral therapy (Ca-CBT) for depression and anxiety in 50 people living with HIV in Pakistan. The therapy was delivered by trained HIV health workers and included culturally relevant stories and materials. The study aimed to see if the approach is feasible and acceptable, not yet whether it works.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Culturally Adapted Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (Ca-CBT)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could provide a practical, low-cost therapy to ease depression and anxiety in people living with HIV, especially in low-literacy settings.
What could go wrong
This is a small pilot study (50 participants) focused on feasibility, not effectiveness. Results may not apply to other populations, and the therapy may not reduce symptoms significantly.
