Nerve block may ease pain after carpal tunnel release
NCT ID NCT05372393
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether adding a nerve block to local anesthesia reduces pain after carpal tunnel release surgery. 118 adults with carpal tunnel syndrome will be randomly assigned to receive either local anesthesia alone or local anesthesia plus a nerve block. Pain levels will be tracked for 72 hours after surgery.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
local infiltration anaesthesia (lidocaine, bupivacaine, sodium bicarbonate) with or without distal median nerve block
What this could lead to
If adding a nerve block works, it could mean less pain after carpal tunnel surgery without needing stronger anesthesia.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial (118 people) comparing two anesthesia methods. The nerve block may not reduce pain enough to be worth the extra step.
