No tourniquet, less pain? study tests new approach for carpal tunnel release

NCT ID NCT07617064

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tested two numbing methods for carpal tunnel surgery in 100 adults. One method uses lidocaine with epinephrine and no tourniquet (WALANT), while the other uses lidocaine alone with a tourniquet. The main goal was to see which method causes less pain during the operation. Patients rated their pain on a scale from 0 to 10.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

lidocaine with epinephrine (WALANT technique) vs lidocaine alone with tourniquet

What this could lead to

If WALANT proves less painful, it could become the preferred method for carpal tunnel surgery, reducing patient discomfort and simplifying the procedure.

What could go wrong

This is a small, completed trial (100 participants) comparing two established techniques. Results may not apply to all patients or settings, and individual pain responses vary.
