Sugar water injection may rival steroids for carpal tunnel pain

NCT ID NCT06360510

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This completed study tested whether an injection of 5% dextrose (a sugar solution) works as well as a steroid (betamethasone) to relieve pain and symptoms in people with mild-to-moderate carpal tunnel syndrome. Thirty participants received one of the two ultrasound-guided injections. The goal was to see if the safer, non-steroid option could provide similar relief.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

5% dextrose injection and betamethasone injection

What this could lead to

If dextrose works as well as betamethasone, it could offer a safer, steroid-free option for managing carpal tunnel pain.

What could go wrong

This is a small, completed trial with only 30 participants, so results may not apply widely. Dextrose may prove less effective than the standard steroid treatment.
