Could a simple Finger-Prick replace the dreaded diabetes test for kids?

NCT ID NCT06815081

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study from the University of Oxford is testing whether a finger-prick blood test, done at home, can replace the standard oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) for diagnosing type 1 and type 2 diabetes in children and young people. The standard OGTT requires a vein drip and multiple blood samples over hours, which is uncomfortable. The researchers will also explore using a continuous glucose monitor as an alternative. The study involves 135 participants and aims to see if the home test is accurate and acceptable for routine care.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

finger-prick glucose test and continuous glucose monitor

What this could lead to

If successful, this could make diabetes testing easier and more comfortable for children, allowing early diagnosis at home instead of in a clinic.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early feasibility study (135 participants) focused on accuracy and acceptability, not on treatment. The home test may not match the precision of the standard venous test.
