Mucus mystery: new study aims to uncover role of airway blockages in lung disease
NCT ID NCT06858748
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This observational study will use CT scans to measure mucus plugging in the airways of people with asthma, COPD, or chronic cough, and compare them to healthy volunteers. Researchers hope to understand how mucus changes over time and find biomarkers that could guide treatment. The study will enroll 240 adults and 50 children with lung disease, plus 100 healthy adults, and follow them for two years.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this study could help doctors better understand how mucus affects lung diseases and guide more personalized treatments.
What could go wrong
This is an observational study, not a treatment trial. It will not directly test any new therapy, and results may take years to influence clinical practice.
