Anti-Inflammatory drug could stop blood cancer before it starts

NCT ID NCT05641831

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This phase II trial tests whether canakinumab, a drug that reduces inflammation, can prevent blood cancer in people with CCUS—a condition where low blood counts and genetic mutations raise cancer risk. About 110 adults with high-risk CCUS will receive either canakinumab or a placebo. The study aims to see if the drug delays or stops progression to leukemia or related cancers.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Canakinumab

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a way to prevent blood cancers in people with CCUS by targeting inflammation.

What could go wrong

This is an early phase II trial with only 110 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The drug may not stop cancer progression and could have side effects like increased infection risk.
