Can two common supplements stop chronic pain after heart surgery?
NCT ID NCT07144033
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether taking butyrate and taurine supplements daily can prevent chronic pain after heart surgery. 216 adults having elective heart surgery will receive either the supplements or a placebo for three months after their operation. Researchers will track pain levels, recovery quality, and side effects to see if this simple approach helps.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
butyrate and taurine (dietary supplements)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a simple, safe supplement routine to prevent long-term pain after heart surgery, reducing reliance on opioids.
What could go wrong
This is a phase 2 trial with only 216 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The supplements might not reduce pain more than placebo, and long-term effects are still unknown.
