BUFF trial: which water pill works best for liver patients?
NCT ID NCT06941415
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether bumetanide is better than furosemide at removing excess fluid in adults hospitalized with cirrhosis. About 500 participants will receive one of the two diuretics as part of standard care. The main goal is to see which drug leads to greater weight loss by day 7, with a focus on safety and kidney function.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
bumetanide and furosemide (diuretics)
What this could lead to
If bumetanide works better, it could become the preferred diuretic for hospitalized cirrhosis patients, helping them lose excess fluid faster and potentially reducing serious complications.
What could go wrong
This is a pragmatic trial comparing two existing drugs, so no breakthrough is expected. The benefit may be modest, and both drugs carry risks like kidney injury or electrolyte imbalances.
