Simple breathing exercise could ease lung problems after spinal cord injury

NCT ID NCT07645027

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether a low-volume nose resistance breathing exercise using an Acapella device plus an incentive spirometer can improve lung function and reduce shortness of breath, cough, and phlegm in people with cervical spinal cord injuries. Forty-two inpatients aged 18–38 will be split into two groups: one doing the new breathing exercise and the other doing standard respiratory therapy, both for four weeks. Researchers will measure lung capacity, breathlessness, cough frequency, and sputum before and after treatment.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Acapella device plus Incentive Spirometry

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a simple, drug-free way to improve breathing and reduce coughing and phlegm in people with cervical spinal cord injuries.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage trial with only 42 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The improvement may be modest and not change long-term outcomes.
