Mind over paralysis: Brain-Controlled implant aims to move arms again
NCT ID NCT05665998
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This early study tests a device that reads brain signals and stimulates the spinal cord to help people with cervical spinal cord injury move their arms and hands. Three participants will have electrodes implanted in their brain and over their spinal cord. The goal is to see if the system is safe and can restore some upper limb function.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
ARC-BSI Cervical system (implantable brain and spinal cord stimulator)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a way for people with tetraplegia to regain some arm and hand function using their own brain signals.
What could go wrong
This is a very early safety trial with only 3 participants, so results may not apply widely. The implant surgery carries risks like infection or device failure, and the system may not produce meaningful movement.
