5,000 people, 10 years: the long hunt for BRCA cancer clues
NCT ID NCT03667417
First seen Oct 14, 2026 · Last updated Oct 15, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
Researchers are following 5,000 women and men who carry a BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene mutation to see who develops breast or ovarian cancer over their lifetime. Participants answer questionnaires about their health and cancer history for up to 10 years. The goal is to understand how often cancer occurs in this group and what factors shape that risk.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- What this could lead to
- If the study identifies patterns, it could sharpen risk estimates for people with BRCA mutations and guide when screening or preventive surgery makes the most difference.
- What could go wrong
- This is an observational study, so it cannot prove that any gene or habit causes cancer. Ten years of follow-up means answers arrive slowly, and participants who drop out can weaken the findings.
