Scientists try to 'Teach' the brain before tumor surgery to protect patient function
NCT ID NCT04745156
Summary
This early study is testing a new two-step approach for adults with certain brain tumors that are hard to remove completely because they sit in critical brain areas. First, doctors implant a small device to gently stimulate the brain area tied to the tumor, causing a temporary weakness. Then, patients do physical therapy to 'retrain' their brain, moving that critical function to a safer area. The goal is to then go back and safely remove more of the tumor in a second surgery, potentially leading to better long-term outcomes.
