Scientists test brain zapping during sleep to tweak brain waves

NCT ID NCT07498270

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether a mild, non-invasive electrical stimulation called TI-TES can temporarily change brain activity during sleep, specifically sleep spindles. Up to 24 healthy adults will each have three overnight visits. Researchers will compare brain activity during real stimulation versus a sham (fake) stimulation.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

temporal interference transcranial electrical stimulation (TI-TES)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a non-invasive way to influence brain activity during sleep, which may help understand sleep disorders or memory.

What could go wrong

This is a very early, small study in healthy people, so results may not apply to patients. The effects are temporary and may not be noticeable.
