Brain scan study aims to unlock mystery of auditory hallucinations

NCT ID NCT07003529

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This pilot study uses MRI scans to investigate whether a small brain area called the inferior colliculi plays a role in auditory hallucinations in people with schizophrenia. Researchers will compare brain activity in 40 participants—20 with hallucinations and 20 without—while they listen to sounds and at rest. The goal is to understand how these brain regions might fail to filter out internal signals, leading to hearing voices.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this study could help explain the brain mechanisms behind auditory hallucinations in schizophrenia, potentially guiding future treatments.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage imaging study, not a treatment trial. It may not find clear differences, and any insights would need much more research to become useful.
