Brain games before surgery: a new way to spot delirium risk?

NCT ID NCT06245005

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tested whether older adults (60+) scheduled for major surgery could complete a set of six brain exercise games on a tablet before their operation. The goal was to see if this was practical in a busy clinic or hospital setting and whether the first-time game scores could help predict who might experience confusion (delirium) after surgery. 120 participants were enrolled, and the researchers measured how many completed the games and how satisfied they were with the experience.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Lumosity brain exercise games on a portable electronic device

What this could lead to

If successful, this could provide a quick, simple way to measure cognitive reserve in older surgical patients and help predict who might develop postoperative delirium.

What could go wrong

This is a small feasibility study, not designed to prove effectiveness. The brain games may not be practical in busy clinical settings, and results may not predict delirium reliably.
