Cancer cocktail: new combo aims to tame tough tumors
NCT ID NCT00479128
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This early-phase trial tests a combination of three drugs—bortezomib, gemcitabine, and doxorubicin—in people with advanced urothelial cancer or other solid tumors that cannot be removed by surgery. The main goal is to find the highest safe dose of the two chemotherapy drugs when given with bortezomib. Researchers will also watch for any tumor shrinkage. About 80 participants are enrolled at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
bortezomib (Velcade) combined with gemcitabine (Gemzar) and doxorubicin (Adriamycin)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could identify a safe dose of this drug combination that may help shrink tumors in people with advanced urothelial cancer or other solid tumors.
What could go wrong
This is a very early (Phase 1) trial with only 80 participants, so it is mainly about finding a safe dose, not proving effectiveness. The combination may cause significant side effects and may not work for everyone.
