Blood test could replace bone scans for osteoporosis monitoring
NCT ID NCT07242612
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This study looks at whether blood tests called bone turnover markers can quickly show if osteoporosis drugs are working in postmenopausal women. Forty women will receive either bone-strengthening or bone-building medications for six months. The goal is to see if these blood tests can replace slow DEXA scans, especially in places with limited access to scanners.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Alendronate, Ibandronate, Risedronate, or Teriparatide
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that simple blood tests can quickly tell if osteoporosis treatment is working, making monitoring easier in areas without advanced scanners.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early study with only 40 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The blood tests might not reliably predict bone strength or fracture risk.
