Lying a certain way after brain surgery may stop bleeds returning

NCT ID NCT06401772

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times

Summary

This study tests whether a specific body posture—raising the legs and tilting the head—can prevent chronic subdural hematoma from recurring after surgery. The trial will enroll 830 older adults who have had surgery for this type of brain bleed. Participants will be randomly assigned to follow the posture instructions or receive standard care, and the main goal is to see if the posture reduces the chance of the hematoma coming back.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

body posture (legs elevated, head tilted)

What this could lead to

If it works, this simple posture change could become a standard, low-cost way to prevent a dangerous brain bleed from returning after surgery.

What could go wrong

This is a behavioral intervention, so results may vary based on how well patients follow instructions. The trial is still recruiting, so it's too early to know if it will be effective.
