Blood test may predict lung decline in rare disease
NCT ID NCT04844359
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study is looking for markers in the blood that can predict whether a person's chronic hypersensitivity pneumonitis will get worse over time. Researchers will follow about 137 patients at 7 U.S. centers for 24 months, tracking lung function, symptoms, and CT scans. The goal is to develop a tool that helps doctors personalize care, not to test a new treatment.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could lead to a simple blood test that helps doctors predict which patients with chronic hypersensitivity pneumonitis will get worse, allowing for earlier and more personalized treatment.
- What could go wrong
- This is an observational study, not a treatment trial. It is relatively small (137 people) and only looks for patterns in the blood. The findings may not apply to all patients or lead to immediate changes in care.
