First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This pilot study investigates how common low energy availability, iron deficiency, and low vitamin D levels are among Black collegiate athletes. Participants who are found to have low iron or vitamin D will receive daily supplements for 12 weeks. The goal is to better understand these health issues in this specific group and see if supplementation can help correct them.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
iron bisglycinate and vitamin D supplements
What this could lead to
If successful, this study could help identify common nutrient deficiencies in Black collegiate athletes and guide tailored supplement strategies to improve their health and performance.
What could go wrong
This is a small pilot study (36 participants) at a single institution, so results may not apply to all athletes. The supplement phase is short (12 weeks), and long-term benefits or risks are not assessed.
