Can syncing a cochlear implant with a hearing aid help you hear better?
NCT ID NCT05898659
First seen Jan 15, 2026 · Last updated Jun 23, 2026 · Updated 33 times
Summary
This study compares two fitting methods for people who use a cochlear implant in one ear and a hearing aid in the other. One method synchronizes the devices, the other does not. Researchers want to see if synchronization helps with sound localization and speech understanding in noise. Twenty adults with severe hearing loss will participate.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Cochlear implant with tonotopy-based fitting, with or without synchronization with a hearing aid
What this could lead to
If successful, this could improve how well people with hearing loss locate sounds and understand speech in noisy environments.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study with only 20 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The benefits of synchronization may be modest.
