Battle of the stents: which drainage method wins for bile duct cancer?
NCT ID NCT06196164
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study compares two endoscopic procedures—EUS-BD and ERCP-BD—for draining blocked bile ducts caused by cancers near the pancreas or bile duct. Forty adults with distal malignant bile duct obstruction will be randomly assigned to one of the two procedures. The main goal is to see which method keeps the bile duct open longer, with secondary measures including success rates, complications, and survival.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
endoscopic drainage procedure (EUS-BD or ERCP-BD)
What this could lead to
If successful, this study could show which drainage method works better for people with bile duct blockage from cancer, helping doctors choose the best option.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study with only 40 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. Both procedures carry risks like infection, bleeding, or stent failure.
