Can gentle training with blood flow cuffs replace heavy lifting for shoulder strength?
NCT ID NCT07186231
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This completed trial compared two shoulder strength training methods in 23 healthy adults: low-load training with a blood flow restriction (BFR) cuff and traditional high-load training without BFR. Participants trained twice a week for four weeks. Researchers measured changes in shoulder muscle mass, strength, power, and endurance to see if the gentler BFR method could produce similar results to heavy lifting.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Blood flow restriction (BFR) training device
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that low-load BFR training builds shoulder muscle as effectively as heavy lifting, offering a gentler alternative for people who cannot lift heavy weights.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial in healthy adults, not patients. Results may not apply to injured or older populations, and BFR carries risks like bruising or discomfort.
