New bowel prep could boost colonoscopy success in cirrhosis patients

NCT ID NCT07668778

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether adding a laxative (bisacodyl) and a longer low-fiber diet to the standard bowel prep improves colonoscopy quality in people with cirrhosis. About 252 adults will be randomly assigned to either the standard or modified prep. The goal is to see if the new approach leads to better colon cleaning and higher detection of polyps or cancer.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
polyethylene glycol (PEG) plus bisacodyl
What this could lead to
If it works, this could provide a safer, more effective bowel preparation method for people with cirrhosis, improving colonoscopy quality and colorectal cancer detection.
What could go wrong
This is a Phase 3 trial, but it hasn't started recruiting yet. The modified regimen may not significantly improve outcomes and could cause more side effects like cramping or dehydration.
