Double antibiotic attack: could a combo therapy beat strep in the blood?
NCT ID NCT07240077
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study compares standard beta-lactam antibiotics alone versus beta-lactam plus levofloxacin in adults with streptococcal bacteremia (bacteria in the blood). 165 participants will be randomly assigned to receive either the combination or monotherapy. The goal is to see if adding levofloxacin reduces complications like persistent infection, death, or spread of infection.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
levofloxacin (antibiotic) added to beta-lactam antibiotics
What this could lead to
If adding levofloxacin works, it could become a new standard treatment for streptococcal bloodstream infections, reducing complications and deaths.
What could go wrong
This is a relatively small, early-stage trial (165 participants) and may not show a clear benefit. Adding levofloxacin also carries risks like antibiotic resistance and side effects.
