Summary

This study tested a behavioral activation program given as part of a freshman orientation course at the University of Kansas. The program helps students set personal goals and engage in rewarding activities to indirectly reduce alcohol misuse, stress, binge eating, and depression. Over 500 freshmen took part, and researchers measured drinking patterns and related problems over time.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

behavioral activation (a goal-setting and activity-based counseling approach)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could offer a low-cost, school-based way to help freshmen drink less and improve mental health without traditional therapy.

What could go wrong

This is a single-site Phase 2 trial with no blinding, so results may not apply to other colleges or students. The intervention is brief and may not produce lasting changes.
