Beetroot juice may supercharge exercise benefits for seniors

NCT ID NCT07572266

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether adding a beetroot juice supplement (rich in nitrates) to a 12-week exercise program helps adults aged 60+ gain more fitness and muscle strength. 226 participants will be randomly assigned to receive either the active supplement or a placebo. The goal is to see if the supplement reduces the number of people who don't get meaningful improvements from exercise.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

nitrate-enriched beetroot juice

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a simple dietary supplement that helps older adults get more out of exercise, improving physical fitness and healthspan.

What could go wrong

This is an early-stage trial with no phase, and the supplement may not provide additional benefits beyond exercise alone. Results may vary by individual.
