New hope for kids with Drug-Resistant TB: bedaquiline trial launches
NCT ID NCT02354014
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests a drug called bedaquiline in children and teens (0 months to under 18 years) with multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB), a lung infection that does not respond to standard antibiotics. About 60 participants will receive bedaquiline along with other TB medications. The goal is to find the right dose for different age groups and to see if the drug is safe and helps clear the infection.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Bedaquiline (TMC207)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could provide a safe and effective treatment option for children with multidrug-resistant tuberculosis, a serious infection that is hard to treat.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase study (Phase 2) with no comparison group, so results may not confirm effectiveness. Side effects are possible, and the drug may not work for all children.
