Can gentle sensory therapy soothe severe schizophrenia?
NCT ID NCT07769749
First seen Aug 18, 2026 · Last updated Aug 19, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This trial asks whether basal stimulation therapy—a gentle approach using touch and sensory cues—can improve the health and well-being of adults with schizophrenia who live in permanent institutional care. Participants, aged 55 and older with long-standing schizophrenia, will receive either standard physiotherapy alone or physiotherapy plus basal stimulation twice a week for six weeks. Researchers will measure changes in consciousness, cognitive function, and blood markers to see if this therapy offers added benefits.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- basal stimulation therapy (a gentle sensory-based therapy) combined with standard physiotherapy
- What this could lead to
- If effective, this therapy could offer a drug-free way to ease anxiety and improve quality of life for people with severe schizophrenia in long-term care.
- What could go wrong
- This is a very small early-stage study (12 participants), so results may not apply broadly. The therapy is gentle, but its benefits remain unproven.
